BRUSSELS: The Coalition for App Fairness, alongside 17 other organisations representing app developers, associations, digital businesses, news media publishers, consumer organisations and civil society groups, has published a joint letter raising serious concerns over Apple’s new business terms for app developers in the European Union, and over the European Commission’s apparent acceptance of them.
The letter argues that Apple’s revised framework does not resolve Apple’s non-compliance with the Digital Markets Act (DMA) and continues to undermine meaningful competition both within and outside the App Store. It warns that excessive fees and restrictive conditions risk preventing alternative distribution channels from developing into effective competitors, narrowing choice and innovation for developers and consumers.
The signatories call on the European Commission to consult affected parties and hear their concerns as part of its assessment of Apple’s new terms before reaching a decision. They also call for greater transparency and clarity on the status of the ongoing DMA proceedings, including which proceedings remain open and how the Commission intends to bring them to a formal conclusion.
