Coalition for App Fairness Statement on Legislation to Address Online Platform Monopolies in Korea

SEOUL, KOREA – Today, Gene Burrus, Global Policy Counsel for The Coalition for App Fairness (CAF), released the following statement after Assemblyman Kim Nam-geun introduced legislation to put an end to the abusive behaviors of Apple and Google on mobile devices.

“The National Assembly is demonstrating their commitment to ending the abusive, anticompetitive behavior of mobile app gatekeepers. This new bill builds upon the previous South Korean law on app store payments by codifying the parameters for gatekeeper platforms and outlining the specific anticompetitive behaviors that are prohibited under the act. This bill stands to deliver a more competitive and innovative mobile app ecosystem providing Korean consumers with better, cheaper digital goods and services. CAF welcomes this important legislation, and looks forward to working with The National Assembly to ensure it fulfills its promise for all Korean developers and consumers.”
