New Proposal for ACCC Powers to Promote Mobile Competition

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, The Coalition for App Fairness (CAF), released the following statement in response to reports that Assistant Treasurer Stephen Jones announced that the government will support legislation to grant the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) new tools to promote fair online competition and protect consumers.

“With this announcement, Australia is poised to join a growing global movement to create a more competitive mobile app ecosystem. This important first step could empower the ACCC with the necessary tools to finally bring competition to the mobile app ecosystem. We strongly support prioritizing combatting Apple’s and Google’s stranglehold over app stores, which have stifled innovation, undermined economic dynamism, and harmed consumers in Australia for too long.

“We look forward to a potential code of conduct regime in Australia that truly holds app store gatekeepers accountable – only then will we see the benefits of real competition for consumers and developers alike.”
