Coalition for App Fairness Urges CMA to Investigate Apple’s and Google’s Anticompetitive Activities in Mobile App Stores

LONDON, U.K. – Today, The Coalition for App Fairness (CAF), released the following statement after the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) announced their independent inquiry group recommended the CMA investigate Apple’s and Google’s mobile ecosystem activities using new powers under the Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Act (DMCCA).

“We completely agree with the CMA’s independent inquiry group: Apple and Google must be investigated for their app store monopolies as soon as the CMA’s new powers come into force.

“CMA market studies have shown that Apple’s and Google’s restrictions on the mobile app ecosystem have cost £4bn, severely hampering UK growth and innovation. Addressing these anti-competitive app store practices is crucial to unlocking significant potential for investment and increased consumer choice.

“We urge the CMA board to act swiftly and launch a full investigation as soon as their new powers come into force.”
